A suggested shape for the weekend

Orange works particularly well when you resist turning it into a checklist. The region is known for cool-climate wine, restaurants, produce, gardens and more than 30 cellar doors, so the best plan is usually to choose a few things properly and leave room between them.

Friday

arrive, eat, exhale.

Get there with enough daylight left to settle in. Unpack, work out where everyone is sleeping and give yourself a minute before heading back out.

Make Friday night the easy one: dinner in town, one good bottle, then back to the house rather than trying to squeeze the whole destination into the first six hours.

Saturday

make wine the plan, not the race.

Orange’s cellar doors are spread across the countryside around town. Pick a small number, book where required and give yourself time for the drive, the tasting and the conversation.

A long lunch belongs in the middle of the day. Then either add one last cellar door or call it and head home while the afternoon still feels like an afternoon.

Sunday

leave slowly.

Keep Sunday morning loose: coffee, a wander through town or one of Orange’s gardens, then breakfast or an early lunch before the drive home.

If you happen to be there for one of the region’s seasonal events or markets, build around that. Otherwise, the luxury is not needing one more booking.
